Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, again he appoints a certain day, “Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted,
“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts.”
Hebrews 4:6
On Rest, from Charles H. Spurgeon,
Those who preach this rest must possess it themselves. “Not long ago, one of our ministers was preaching upon salvation, and the work of the Spirit in the heart, when one of the congregation rose and asked him respectfully, ‘Sir, do you know all this by the report of others, or has this taken place in your own experience?’ The preacher was by no means put about by the question, but rather rejoiced in it; for he could honestly reply, ‘I have trusted Christ. I am saved, and I know and feel the peace which results there from.’ If he could not have made that solemn statement, he would have had no influence over the person who had put the question.” (Spurgeon)
A Prayer for Today
Father,
Today, I lift my heart to you in prayer
asking that you prepare me for the path that lies ahead.
This day I ask that ‘all of me’ be made holy before you.
Pour your Spirit upon me, Lord and wash me of all that is not pure.
Let me consecrate myself in this hour as yours.
May I hear your voice and know you as my Shepherd;
the One that calls, the One that I hear.
Help me to find rest today in the comfort of Your peace.
Keep me near You, beside you, strengthened only because of You.
Let my heart trust that your protection goes before me at all times
and in all ways.
Help me to possess the rest that is your gift when I walk within your guardianship.
Today, when I hear your voice, may my heart leap with joy
for I hear my Shepherd, my God and the Person of Peace.
Today, when I hear your voice, may my heart sweeten and smile with delight,
for I am listening to the voice of Love,
One that calls me to peace and a spiritual rest beyond what my heart can fathom.
This a bliss, a gift to me and to each far more than what I can see or imagine
with a mortal heart.
Today, this heart reaches and lifts with gratitude.
Let me hear Your Calling, Lord.
In Jesus Name
Amen
