“Living the Values of a Turned Heart” Scripture, word and prayer from L.Willows

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.– Matthew 6:19-21

In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus connected his command to stop laying up “earthly treasures” and store up “treasures in heaven” with where our hearts are. This is powerful teaching about shifting our perspective when it comes to what we value and how we act upon what we value. Jesus knows that what we value is reflected in how we live. Living Values in our present lives with the ‘eyes of our heart’ set upon our eternal home in Heaven with God looks differently than laying our treasure on earth.

When we do not lay up treasures on earth we are turning away from one way of living. and making a heart decision to walk another way. We are two vital things in this turning. First, we are acknowledging that everything in our lives belongs to and is from God. Second, we are put Trust in God, whose promises are faithful. His Kingdom is eternal.

Setting our treasures forward so that they are seeded into the Kingdom of Heaven is the greatest action that we can take in the present. It is our way of Living the Values of turned Heart as we trust and walk with God now in our lives.

What might it look like? It is Sacrificial giving above and beyond tithing to your own faith community. Giving to the poor, to communities and peoples in need, developing awareness of those around you. Discovering your own gifts and sharing them generously with others. Realize that resources include work experience, mentoring and the generous gift of time shared as well.

Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe. Hebrews 12:28

We are so fortunate to Know Christ. In a world and in each life that is surely faced with uncertainty and futures that we may wish to predict but may never know, we have been given a certainty – our eternal future and home are with God. We can have this security in the present hour even if the hour “shakes” our worldly foundations. Our lives are built upon a Rock that is formidable, one that we worship with reverence and awe. There, here we worship. Praying that our worship is acceptable to Him, we come with reverence before God!
